Francis
Assisi
Francis
Assisi was born in Umbria in 1181 or 1182. He lived a
life enjoying the good things available to him. He was
not interested in the family business nor in learning.
However, he was not licentious and would always give
alms for the love of God. After suffering from illness
he heard a voice telling him to serve God. He began to
do this and was disowned by his father for taking some
merchandise and selling it without permission. He used
the money for doing good, but was told to return it to
his father. His good humor and desire to serve attracted
followers. In his personal life he battled mightily with
temptations and lived a life of poverty. He made poverty
a key point in his rule. To conquer the temptations he
would undertake strict mortifications. He travelled to
Egypt to convert the Saracens but was unsuccessful. His
order grew so large and began to change so much that it
caused him much distress. He grew spiritually by
meditating on the crucifixion and was given the stigmata.
Before his death, he blessed all his brothers and
exhorted them to love God, poverty and the Gospel. He
died on October 3, 1226. He is the most widely acclaimed
saint, even among those who are not Catholics. His feast
day is October 4th.
